Habitat

The firefly squid can be found mainly in the ocean surrounding Japan. Generally they live very deep in the ocean, around 700-1,200 feet within the twilight zone, only coming up to the surface during the night to look for food. Then, once daylight comes, they retreat down to the deeper levels of the ocean to rest.

Seen above is the location firefly squids head to during spawning season, which lasts from February to July. During the spring, millions of adult firefly squids head to Toyama Bay to lay eggs, which afterwards causes them to die. This makes Toyama Bay a popular spot to visit during this time, as many people come see the beautiful glow of the squids and fishermen come to hunt the dying to sell.

Fun Fact!

Firefly squids exhibit a migration patter known as “diel vertical migration,” which is where they move to the surface at night and back to the deeper levels when daytime comes.
