Adaptations

The varying adaptations and features of the firefly squid comes together to make a complex organism. From their two tentacles, made to propel themselves through the water, and the rest of their 8 arms used to grab things and help them maneuver. Combined with their small size, being roughly 3 inches in length once reaching adulthood, it makes for a very streamlined squid indeed.

Fun Fact!

Firefly Squids have more than 800 photophores on their body.

But what are photophores, anyhow? Well, photophores are light producing organs. They’re used by firefly squids to attract small fish for them to eat, and are possibly used for communication between others of the species as well.
